Artful Conversation

   Overview

Medical decision-making is complex and difficult for patients with a life-threatening illness. Discussion of the benefits and burdens of treatments such as CPR, artificial nutrition and hydration, hospitalization or shifting goals of care from cure to hospice or comfort care take a specialized skill set not often taught in formal professional education. Hospice staff frequently are called upon to discuss these difficult, sensitive issues with patients/caregivers sometimes in very emotionally charged situations. Staff needs tools and training to accomplish this task effectively. This module is designed to help staff learn the art of empathic conversations that should lead to a better understanding of patient/caregiver concerns and facilitate open discussions about goals, treatment options and medical decision-making that is respectful of patient wishes.
